Isn’t Rajendran’s depiction of the local pangolin full of whimsy? It looks worthy of illustrating a children’s book. Here are some interesting facts about this scaly creature: – It has no teeth – It is a picky eater that feasts mainly on ants and termites – It can be found in our nature parks, as well as Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. Outside of Singapore, the erroneous perception that its scales have medicinal value has led to it being one of the world’s most trafficked animals. Let us raise awareness for its conservation.
Dragon Playground

Abdul Raziq Bin Abdul Rahman (11, Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School)
When learning about icons of Singapore, Abdul Raziq realised how “dragon playgrounds” are quintessential to the Singapore story in the 1970s. He was so impressed, he even planted a Singapore flag on the top of his dragon, not unlike a flag of pride atop Everest! The most famous of these dragon playgrounds is in Toa Payoh; it has been spared the bulldozer and preserved for Abdul Raziq’s generation.

When concrete meets jungle, you get Quiana’s elephant playground! Locally designed playground structures inspired by creatures like the dragon and pelican were a common sight in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of these concrete structures have been replaced by steel and plastic playgrounds, but their retro motifs are uniquely Singaporean and a charming symbol of joyful childhood memories.
